Wedding Magician at Heaton House Farm
Written by Nick Rushton — Award-Winning Magician
Heaton House Farm is one of those venues I always look forward to performing at. I've been entertaining guests there many times over the years, and it's a place that genuinely gets better every time I go back. The setting, the layout and the team behind it all make it one of the best wedding venues in the North West for close-up magic.
About Heaton House Farm
Heaton House Farm is a sixth-generation family-run working farm nestled in the picturesque village of Rushton Spencer, on the border of Cheshire and Staffordshire, just outside Macclesfield. The venue sits high on a hillside with stunning panoramic views across three counties — Cheshire, Staffordshire and Derbyshire — and on a clear day, the scenery is absolutely breathtaking.
The venue features beautifully restored rustic sandstone barns with exposed brickwork, oak beams and log burners, paired with modern luxuries and contemporary touches. It's that perfect blend of countryside charm and polished elegance that couples love. Heaton House Farm can host everything from small, intimate gatherings to large celebrations of up to 600 guests, making it one of the most versatile venues in the region.
The venue is exclusively yours on your wedding day, and the dedicated events team are among the most experienced and professional I've worked with. They know exactly how to run a seamless wedding day, and it shows.
Why Heaton House Farm Works Brilliantly for a Magician
Some venues look stunning but don't suit a close-up magician. Heaton House Farm is the opposite — it's designed in a way that makes wedding entertainment flow naturally through the day:
- The North Lawn and Sycamore Tree — the iconic photo spot overlooking those famous three-county views is where guests naturally gather during drinks receptions. In good weather, this outdoor space is perfect for mix-and-mingle magic — guests are relaxed, drinks in hand, and the reactions carry across the lawn.
- The courtyard — between the barns, guests mingle in the courtyard before and after the ceremony. It's an intimate, buzzy space where close-up magic works at its absolute best. Small groups form naturally, and I can move between them seamlessly.
- The dining barn — the dedicated wedding breakfast barn with its warm stone, oak beams and twinkling lights is a wonderful setting for table magic between courses. The layout allows easy movement between tables without disrupting the meal service.
- The party barn — the evening reception space is large enough for a dance floor, bar and entertainment all in one barn, so there's a fantastic atmosphere. A burst of magic as evening guests arrive helps break the ice and gets the party started.
- Multiple ceremony spaces — indoor and outdoor ceremony options mean the day flows through different areas, keeping everything fresh. I can perform in each space without guests feeling like they've already seen everything.
When to Have a Magician at Heaton House Farm
Having performed at Heaton House Farm many times, the timings that consistently work best are:
- Drinks reception (1–2 hours) — the golden window. While the couple are having photos taken (often by that famous Sycamore Tree), guests are milling about on the lawn or in the courtyard. This is when close-up magic has the biggest impact — it fills what can otherwise be a quiet gap and gives everyone something incredible to talk about.
- Wedding breakfast (1–2 hours) — performing between courses keeps energy high during the meal. The dining barn layout makes it easy to reach every table, and guests love the surprise of magic appearing at their table mid-conversation.
- Evening reception — if evening guests are arriving who weren't at the ceremony, a burst of magic as they arrive integrates them into the celebration instantly. It's the best icebreaker there is.
The Venue and Its Surroundings
Heaton House Farm sits on a hillside surrounded by rolling countryside, cornfields and open farmland. It's a working farm, which gives it an authenticity that purpose-built venues simply can't replicate. The famous views from the North Lawn stretch across Cheshire, Staffordshire and into Derbyshire — photographers love it, and so do guests.
The venue also offers on-site accommodation including a honeymoon suite with those incredible countryside views, so the celebrations don't have to end early. Despite the rural setting, it's easily accessible — just off the A523 between Macclesfield and Leek, with good links to the M6 for guests travelling from further afield.
