How to Choose a Magician for a Corporate Event or Party

Most advice about booking a magician is written for weddings. But choosing one for a corporate event or a party raises different questions — especially around insurance, professional standards and who's actually accountable if something goes wrong. Start With Insurance and Compliance

For corporate events in particular, this is where I'd start — because it's where amateur and professional part company fastest.

• Public Liability Insurance — almost every corporate and hotel venue requires the performer to hold it, and will ask for the certificate in advance. A professional has this ready to send without fuss.
• PAT-tested equipment and a risk assessment — larger venues and company events often request these. You don't want to discover on the day that your entertainer can't be admitted.
• The ability to invoice properly — businesses need a real invoice, sometimes against a purchase order, and a written contract. If someone only takes cash and won't put terms in writing, that's a problem for a company booking.

Check Credentials You Can Actually Verify

"Award-winning" means nothing on its own. What matters is credentials verified by other people: peer-judged competition wins, Magic Circle membership, and genuine TV credits. What tells you the truth is continuous, unedited footage of a real event — so you can see how the magician approaches a group, how people genuinely react, and whether they hold attention naturally. Match the Performer to the Audience

A corporate audience and a birthday party are different rooms. At a corporate event, a magician has to work around speeches, networking and a business tone — often mingling during a drinks reception or moving between tables at a dinner without disrupting the schedule. At a party, the mood is looser and the magic can be bolder and more comedic. Ask how often the magician does your specific type of event, not just events in general.

Questions to Ask Before You Book

• Do you have Public Liability Insurance, and can you send the certificate?
• Can you provide PAT certificates and a risk assessment if the venue asks?
• How do you handle booking, contracts and invoicing?
• Can I see unedited video from a real corporate event or party?
• How do you tailor your performance to a business audience versus a party?
• Is the quote all-inclusive, with travel and any extras covered?

Red Flags to Avoid

• No insurance certificate — a dealbreaker for most corporate and hotel venues
• Cash-only, nothing in writing — no contract, no invoice, no accountability
• No footage of real events — only staged clips or tricks to camera
• No independent reviews — only a testimonials page on their own site
• Vague or hidden costs — travel, parking or overtime that surface later
