How Much Does a Wedding Magician Cost? UK Price Guide

Written by Nick Rushton — Award-Winning Magician

One of the most common questions I get asked is "how much does a wedding magician cost?" The honest answer is it varies — but I'll break down exactly what affects the price, what you should expect to pay, and how to make sure you're getting value for money.

Typical UK Wedding Magician Prices

In 2025, you can expect to pay roughly:

  • £400–£600 — a part-time or newer magician with limited experience
  • £600–£1,000 — an experienced, full-time professional with good reviews
  • £1,000–£1,500+ — a top-tier magician with TV credits, major awards, or extensive experience at high-end events

These are for the typical 2-3 hour booking that covers a drinks reception and wedding breakfast. Very short bookings (1 hour) cost less, but the saving is rarely proportional — a magician's preparation, travel and time commitment is similar whether they perform for one hour or three.

What Affects the Price?

Experience and Reputation

A magician who has performed at 50 weddings and a magician who has performed at 1,000 weddings are offering fundamentally different things. The more experienced performer reads rooms better, handles tricky situations smoothly, manages timing instinctively, and delivers consistently. You're paying for reliability and quality, not just tricks.

Duration

Most wedding magicians offer packages based on how long they perform:

  • 1 hour — drinks reception only, or between courses only
  • 2 hours — drinks reception plus between courses (the most popular option)
  • 3+ hours — covering drinks reception, wedding breakfast, and into the evening reception

Day of the Week

Saturday weddings in peak season (May-September) command the highest prices. Friday, Sunday, and midweek weddings are often cheaper — some magicians offer 10-20% off-peak discounts. Winter weddings (November-February) are typically more affordable too.

Travel Distance

Most professional magicians include travel within a reasonable radius (typically 50-100 miles) in their quote. Beyond that, there may be a travel surcharge or overnight accommodation cost. I include travel across the UK in my fee — no hidden extras.

Number of Guests

Larger weddings (150+ guests) may require a longer booking to ensure everyone gets to see the magic. Some magicians adjust their fee based on guest numbers; others charge the same regardless. Ask when you enquire.

What Do You Actually Get?

For a typical 2-3 hour booking with an experienced close-up magician, you should expect:

  • The magician arriving 15-30 minutes early to introduce themselves to the venue and wedding coordinator
  • Roaming entertainment during the drinks reception — moving between groups of guests, performing 5-8 minute sets
  • Table-to-table magic during the wedding breakfast, visiting each table between courses
  • A varied repertoire — different tricks for different groups, so guests near each other don't see the same thing
  • Professional appearance — suit, well-groomed, blending in with the occasion
  • The ability to read the room — knowing when to approach a group and when to leave them be

Red Flags When Booking

Be cautious of:

  • Very low prices (under £300) — this usually means a hobbyist or someone very inexperienced. Your wedding is too important for a gamble
  • No videos of real performances — if they can only show you a showreel of card flourishes, they may not have much real event experience
  • No reviews — a working magician should have dozens, if not hundreds, of verified reviews
  • Reluctance to speak on the phone — a professional should be happy to discuss your wedding, answer questions, and help you plan the timing
  • Hidden costs — travel, parking, meals, overtime charges. Ask for an all-inclusive quote upfront

Is It Worth It?

A wedding magician fills the gaps in your day that would otherwise be empty. The drinks reception is the biggest gap — up to two hours where guests need entertaining. The gaps between courses during the meal are the second. Without entertainment, these periods are where guests get bored, check their phones, and lose the energy from the ceremony.

The feedback I hear most often from couples is "the magician was the thing our guests talked about most." That's not because magic is better than the food or the venue — it's because the magic is unexpected, personal, and interactive in a way that nothing else at the wedding is.
