Magician for Hire Near Me: What to Actually Check

Written by Nick Rushton — Award-Winning Magician

If you've searched "magician for hire near me," you're probably hoping to find someone good, local and available for your date. It's a sensible instinct — but when it comes to booking a magician, "nearest" and "best" aren't the same thing. Here's what actually matters, and how to find the right performer for your event wherever you are in the UK.

Why "Nearest" Isn't Always "Best"

Unlike a venue or a caterer, a magician isn't tied to one spot. Most established professionals travel for events as a matter of course — I perform right across the UK every year — and travel is usually included in the quote, or added as a small supplement for longer distances. That means the magician five minutes away isn't automatically a better choice than an experienced professional an hour up the motorway. What you're really booking is the performance, the reliability and the track record, not the postcode.

So by all means start local — but treat distance as one factor among several, not the deciding one.

What to Check Instead

  • Independent reviews — look at Google and Facebook, not just the testimonials on the magician's own website. You want a consistent track record, not a handful of lines. My reviews are a good example of what to look for.
  • Unedited video of real events — a slick showreel proves editing skills; continuous footage of a real event proves performing skills. See my videos page for the kind of real footage you should expect.
  • Public Liability Insurance — essential, and required by most wedding and corporate venues before a performer is allowed on site.
  • Availability and coverage — check they're free on your date and genuinely cover your area, with travel included in the quote.
  • Experience with your type of event — a wedding, a corporate event and a party each need a slightly different touch.

For a deeper checklist, see my guides on how to choose a magician for a corporate event or party and, for weddings specifically, how to choose a wedding magician.

Find a Magician in Your Area

I'm a UK-wide close-up magician based in the North West, and I regularly travel the length of the country for weddings, corporate events and parties — from London and Brighton in the south to Edinburgh and Glasgow in Scotland, and everywhere in between.

To see whether I cover your town or city, browse my full areas covered directory — it lists every region and area I work in. If you don't see your exact location, it's almost certainly still covered; I travel UK-wide, so just ask.

The Simple Version

Search locally, but don't stop at distance. Check the reviews, watch real video, confirm insurance and availability, and get an all-inclusive quote. Do that and you'll book the right magician for your event — whether they're around the corner or a motorway away.

Get in touch for a free, no-obligation quote, and I'll confirm availability and travel for your date and location.
