Best Wedding Venues in Cheshire: A Magician's Guide
Written by Nick Rushton — Award-Winning Magician
Cheshire is home to some of the finest wedding venues in the North West — and as a Cheshire-based magician, I've performed at most of them. From grand country houses to rustic barns, modern hotels to lakeside settings, here's my honest guide to the best wedding venues in the county.
Peckforton Castle
A medieval-style castle set in 500 acres of Cheshire countryside. Ceremonies in the Great Hall feel like something from a film — stone walls, candlelight, and a dramatic staircase entrance. The castle has 48 bedrooms so the whole wedding party can stay over. The drinks reception in the courtyard or on the terrace works brilliantly with a close-up magician. Capacity up to 180.
Colshaw Hall
A stunning private estate near Knutsford with a choice of ceremony locations — the Great Hall, the stables, or the outdoor pavilion. The grounds include formal gardens, a lake, and woodland, providing endless photo opportunities. The separate drinks reception spaces flow well, and the estate has luxury accommodation on site. One of Cheshire's finest venues.
Merrydale Manor
A beautifully restored manor house near Knutsford with a light, airy orangery for ceremonies. The grounds are immaculate, and the interior balances period features with modern styling. It's exclusive use only, so the venue is entirely yours for the day. The layout is excellent for entertainment — the separate drinks reception room gives a magician the perfect window to work before guests move through to dinner.
Nunsmere Hall
A lakeside country house hotel set in beautiful Delamere Forest. The lake and woodland provide a stunning natural backdrop, and the oak-panelled dining room has real character. It's particularly beautiful for autumn weddings when the surrounding forest is in full colour. The drinks reception can be held on the terrace overlooking the lake in summer.
Heaton House Farm
A converted farm near Macclesfield that's become one of Cheshire's most popular barn wedding venues. The oak-framed barn has a warm, rustic feel without being rough around the edges. There's a separate ceremony barn, a cobbled courtyard, and accommodation in converted farm buildings. It's well-run and consistently delivers excellent weddings.
The Mere Golf Resort
A modern luxury hotel on the shores of Mere in Knutsford. The ballroom holds up to 300 guests, and the lakeside terrace provides a dramatic setting for drinks receptions. The hotel's facilities are excellent — spa, pool, golf — which makes it popular for weddings where guests are staying for the weekend. I've performed here many times and the event team is professional and well-organised.
Combermere Abbey
A historic abbey near Whitchurch on the Cheshire/Shropshire border. The Glasshouse — a stunning Victorian fruit house with original glass walls and ceiling — is one of the most unique ceremony spaces in the region. The Abbey grounds include a walled garden, a lake, and ancient woodland. It's a truly special venue with real history.
Crewe Hall
A Jacobean mansion now operated as a hotel, with grand public rooms, ornate ceilings, and impressive grounds. The long gallery and main hall have genuine wow factor. It's a larger venue, holding up to 250 for a sit-down meal, and works well for weddings that want grandeur without being stuffy.
Sandhole Oak Barn
A beautifully converted barn near Congleton with stunning views across the Cheshire Plain. The barn is oak-framed and filled with natural light. The separate ceremony room, drinks reception area, and dining barn create a natural flow through the day. One of the best barn venues in the North West.
Owen House Wedding Barn
A charming, intimate barn venue near Mobberley. It's smaller than some of the bigger Cheshire venues (up to about 120 guests), which gives it a personal, relaxed atmosphere. The wildflower meadow and countryside setting are beautiful for photos, and the owner-managed approach means nothing is overlooked.
What to Look for in a Cheshire Venue
- Accommodation — Cheshire is rural, and many venues are down country lanes with no nearby hotels. Venues with on-site accommodation mean guests can relax and enjoy the evening without worrying about taxis
- Exclusive use — the best Cheshire venues are exclusive use, meaning no other events happening on the same day
- Outdoor space — Cheshire's countryside is one of its biggest assets. A venue with gardens, grounds, or a terrace gives you options for photos, lawn games, and drinks in the sunshine
- Wet weather plan — this is Cheshire, so it will probably rain at some point. Make sure the venue has indoor space for everything
