How to Choose a Wedding Magician in Manchester
Written by Nick Rushton — Award-Winning Magician
Choosing a wedding magician in Manchester can feel overwhelming — there are dozens of magicians to choose from, and it's hard to tell who's genuinely good and who just has a flashy website. As someone who's performed at hundreds of Manchester weddings over the past 29 years, here's my honest advice on what to look for.
1. Watch Real Video Footage
This is the single most important thing you can do. A polished showreel with cinematic editing, dramatic music and slow-motion shots looks impressive — but it doesn't tell you what the magician is actually like at an event.
Look for unedited live footage filmed at real weddings and events. You want to see how they interact with guests, how people react in real time, and whether the performer has genuine charisma and warmth — not just technical skill.
Red flag: If a magician has no live video or only highly edited clips, that's a warning sign.
2. Read Genuine Reviews
Don't just look at the testimonials on a magician's website — they've obviously chosen their best ones. Check independent review platforms like Google, Facebook and wedding directories. Look for specific detail in reviews rather than generic praise.
A magician with hundreds of genuine reviews from real clients is a much safer bet than someone with five cherry-picked quotes on their homepage.
What to look for: Reviews that mention specific moments, that feel personal rather than generic, and that come from a mix of event types (weddings, corporate, parties).
3. Check Their Experience
How long have they been performing professionally? There's a big difference between a hobbyist who does magic on weekends and a full-time professional who's performed at thousands of events. Ask how many weddings they've done, and whether they're used to working at the type of venue you've booked.
Experience matters because weddings are high-pressure — you need someone who can read a room, manage their timing around the photographer and speeches, and adapt if things don't go exactly to plan.
4. Meet Them (or at Least Talk to Them)
A quick phone call or video chat can tell you a lot. You want someone who's friendly, professional, easy to talk to and genuinely interested in your wedding — not just trying to close a sale. A good magician will ask about your event, your guests and your vision before talking about themselves.
Trust your instincts. If someone feels pushy, disorganised or vague, move on.
5. Understand What You're Getting
Not all close-up magicians offer the same thing. Make sure you understand:
- Mix-and-mingle — performing to standing groups during the drinks reception. This is the most popular option for wedding magicians.
- Table magic — performing at seated tables between courses during the wedding breakfast.
- Combination — many couples book both: mix-and-mingle during drinks, then table magic between courses.
Ask how long the performance will last, how many guests they can cover, and whether they adapt their style for different age groups.
6. Check Insurance & Contracts
A professional magician should have:
- Public Liability Insurance — most Manchester venues require this. I'm insured through Equity.
- Secure online booking — with efficient online contracts and payments confirming the date, times, venue, fee and cancellation terms. If someone won't provide proper booking confirmation, don't book them.
- Professional presentation — they should be smartly dressed, arrive early and be easy to coordinate with your venue.
7. Don't Choose on Price Alone
A professional Manchester wedding magician typically costs between £400 and £900 for 2–3 hours. If someone is significantly cheaper, ask yourself why. Are they a full-time professional? Do they have insurance? Will they still be in business when your wedding comes around?
Equally, the most expensive magician isn't necessarily the best. Focus on quality of reviews, video evidence and personal rapport rather than price alone.

8. Ask About Logistics
A good magician will handle all the logistics for you. Before booking, check:
- Do they need a separate room to get ready? (Usually not for close-up magic)
- Will they coordinate timings with the venue and photographer?
- Can they work around speeches and the first dance?
- Do they bring their own equipment? (A close-up magician doesn't need a stage or sound system)
The Best Manchester Wedding Venues for Magic
Some Manchester venues are particularly well suited to close-up magic. Venues with a separate drinks reception area — like The Midland, The Lowry and Didsbury House — work brilliantly because guests are mingling naturally and there's a perfect window for magic before the meal.
