Magician vs Mentalist: What's the Difference?

Written by Nick Rushton — Award-Winning Magician

When booking entertainment for an event, you'll see performers described as magicians, mentalists, mind readers, illusionists, and close-up magicians. They're not all the same thing. Here's a clear breakdown of what each term means and which type of performer works best at different events.

Magician

"Magician" is the broadest term. It covers anyone who performs magic — from a children's entertainer pulling rabbits from hats to a Las Vegas illusionist making helicopters disappear. Within that broad category, there are several specialisms.

Close-Up Magician

A close-up magician (also called a table magician or walkabout magician) performs magic at close range — right in front of you, often in your hands. They use everyday objects: playing cards, coins, phones, borrowed watches, rubber bands. No stage, no props table, no assistant.

This is the most popular type of magician for weddings, corporate events, and private parties. The magician moves between groups of guests, performing short sets of 5-8 minutes for each group.

Mentalist / Mind Reader

A mentalist specialises in effects that appear to demonstrate mental powers — reading thoughts, predicting choices, influencing decisions, and revealing personal information that they couldn't possibly know. Derren Brown is the most famous mentalist in the UK.

Mentalism doesn't look like traditional magic. There are no playing cards (usually), no visual tricks, and no "ta-da" moments. Instead, it's quieter and more unsettling — someone thinks of a word, and the mentalist reveals it. The reaction isn't "wow" — it's "how on earth?"

Illusionist

An illusionist performs large-scale magic on a stage — making people appear and disappear, sawing assistants in half, levitating, escaping from locked boxes. David Copperfield and Dynamo are illusionists. This type of magic requires a stage, lighting, sound, and usually a crew. It's a theatrical show, not walkabout entertainment.

Illusionists are booked for theatre shows, large corporate productions, and TV. They're not typically suitable for weddings or private parties due to the stage requirements and cost.

Children's Magician

A children's magician specialises in entertaining young audiences — typically at birthday parties, school events, and family days. Their shows involve audience participation, comedy, and age-appropriate magic. The skills are different from adult close-up magic: managing a room of excitable 6-year-olds requires a completely different approach to performing for adults at a black-tie dinner.

Which Should You Book?

For most events — weddings, corporate dinners, parties, awards evenings — a close-up magician who includes mentalism is the best choice. This gives you the visual impact of card and coin magic plus the psychological punch of mind reading, all performed at close range as the magician moves between guests.

That's what I do. My sets blend close-up magic (visual, hands-on effects) with mentalism (thought reading, predictions, psychological effects). This combination means every group gets a varied performance that builds from visual amazement to genuine "how did he know that?" disbelief.

Quick Comparison

  • Close-up magician: Moves between guests, performs in your hands, perfect for events. No stage needed.
  • Mentalist: Reads minds, predicts choices. Can be close-up or stage. More psychological than visual.
  • Illusionist: Stage show with large props. Needs a theatre or big venue. Not for private events.
  • Children's magician: Specialises in kids' parties. Different skill set from adult entertainment.
  • Table magician: A close-up magician who performs at dinner tables between courses.
  • Walkabout magician: A close-up magician who performs for standing groups during drinks receptions.

Most professional event magicians (myself included) combine close-up magic and mentalism in one performance. You don't need to book two separate performers — you get both in one package.
