Birthday Party Entertainment Ideas for Adults: Beyond the Usual

Written by Nick Rushton — Award-Winning Magician

Adult birthday parties often fall into two camps: a meal at a restaurant, or drinks and a DJ at a hired venue. Both are fine, but if you want to make a milestone birthday — a 30th, 40th, 50th or 60th — genuinely memorable, adding entertainment makes all the difference. Here's what works.

Close-Up Magician

A close-up magician moving between guests at a birthday party creates exactly the right kind of energy. The magic happens in people's hands, it's interactive, and it gives guests something to talk about beyond "so, how do you know the birthday boy?"

Birthday parties are particularly good events for magic because the atmosphere is relaxed, people are in a good mood, and the guest list usually mixes different friend groups who don't know each other. The magic breaks the ice between them.

I typically perform for 1.5-2 hours at birthday parties — during the drinks and mingling portion of the evening. By the time the meal or speeches happen, the room is buzzing.

Cocktail Making Class

A mobile cocktail bar with a mixologist who teaches guests to make 3-4 cocktails is interactive, social, and produces something you can drink. It works well for groups of 15-40 people. The class itself takes about 90 minutes, and the cocktails serve as conversation starters. Many companies offer this as a mobile service that comes to your venue.

Live Music

The right live music transforms a birthday party. For a relaxed dinner party, a jazz duo or acoustic guitarist sets the mood without overpowering conversation. For a party that's meant to get people dancing, a 4-5 piece covers band playing requests is hard to beat. The key is matching the music to the energy you want.

Casino Night

Fun casino tables with play money give guests something to do between arriving and dinner. Blackjack and roulette are the most popular — they're easy to learn and inherently social. It works particularly well for 40th and 50th birthday parties where the guest list includes people from different parts of the birthday person's life who need something to do together.

Wine or Whisky Tasting

A guided tasting led by a sommelier or whisky expert is educational and social. It gives structure to the first part of the evening and works well as a pre-dinner activity. Tastings work best with groups of 10-30 — larger groups lose the intimacy. Budget around £30-50 per person including the drinks.

Private Dining Experience

Book a private room at a good restaurant, add a magician between courses, and you have an evening that feels special without requiring months of planning. The restaurant handles the food and drink, the magician handles the entertainment, and the host can actually relax and enjoy their birthday instead of worrying about logistics.

Themed Parties

Theme parties work brilliantly for milestone birthdays when done well:

  • Decade theme — 80s, 90s, or the decade the birthday person was born. Dress code, music, and decorations from the era
  • Murder mystery — hire a murder mystery company or run your own. Works for dinner parties of 12-30
  • Casino Royale — black tie, casino tables, cocktails, and a magician
  • Festival theme — for summer birthdays with garden space: multiple "stages" (areas) with different activities, street food, and a bar

Ideas for Milestone Birthdays

30th Birthday

The friend group is usually well-established and up for a party. Cocktail making, a DJ, and a magician during the drinks work well. Keep it social and high-energy.

40th Birthday

Often a mix of family and friends. Entertainment that works across generations is key — a magician, live music during dinner, and a DJ for the evening covers everyone.

50th Birthday

Typically more formal than a 30th or 40th. A sit-down dinner with table magic between courses, followed by live music or a DJ. Casino tables during the pre-dinner drinks add a touch of glamour.

60th and Beyond

Focus on comfort and conversation. Live music during dinner, a magician during the drinks reception, and a venue that allows guests to sit, talk, and enjoy the evening without needing to be on a dance floor.

Practical Tips

  • Start with the venue — the space dictates what entertainment is possible. A restaurant private room is different from a marquee in the garden
  • Book entertainment for the first 2 hours — the beginning of the evening is when people arrive, mingle, and need something to do. The later part usually takes care of itself
  • Mix active and passive — a magician (active) plus background music (passive) covers both the people who want to be entertained and those who just want to chat
  • Consider the guest list — entertainment that works for 20 close friends is different from entertainment that works for 80 people from different parts of your life
