Best Wedding Venues in Yorkshire: A Magician's Guide

Written by Nick Rushton — Award-Winning Magician

Yorkshire has some of the finest wedding venues in the North of England — from grand stately homes to converted barns, city centre hotels to remote moorland estates. Having performed at weddings across Yorkshire for over 29 years, here are the venues that consistently impress me.

Rudding Park, Harrogate

A luxury hotel set in 300 acres of parkland just outside Harrogate. The Radcliffe Room is a stunning ceremony space with floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the gardens. The separate drinks reception area flows well into the dining room, giving a close-up magician the perfect window to work. The spa and golf course make it a popular choice for wedding weekends where guests stay over.

The Tithe Barn, Bolton Abbey

Set in the grounds of Bolton Abbey in the Yorkshire Dales, this medieval barn has been beautifully restored. The stone walls, wooden beams, and candlelight create an atmosphere that's hard to match. The Abbey ruins provide an extraordinary backdrop for photos. It's a special venue that feels ancient and intimate.

Allerton Castle, Knaresborough

A Gothic Revival castle with dramatic interiors — the Grand Staircase and ballroom are genuinely breathtaking. Ceremonies in the main hall feel like a period drama. The grounds include formal gardens and woodland for photos. It's exclusive use, holding up to 180 for a sit-down meal.

Middleton Lodge, Richmond

A Georgian country estate in the Yorkshire Dales with multiple ceremony and reception spaces. The Coach House, the Walled Garden, and the main house each offer a different feel. The attention to detail is exceptional — from the food to the styling to the service. One of the best-managed wedding venues I've worked at.

The Normans, Billingley

A converted barn venue near Barnsley that's become hugely popular. The oak-framed barn has a contemporary feel — clean lines, natural light, and modern styling. The separate ceremony barn, drinks reception courtyard, and dining barn create a natural flow through the day. Well-run and consistently excellent.

Hazlewood Castle, Leeds

A medieval castle between Leeds and York with 77 acres of grounds. The castle has real history — dating back to the 12th century — and the rooms have genuine period character. The separate drinks reception spaces work well for entertainment, and the castle provides dramatic photo opportunities inside and out.

Saltmarshe Hall, Goole

A Georgian country house in the East Riding with elegant interiors and beautiful gardens. The main hall, drawing rooms, and conservatory each work as ceremony or reception spaces. It has an understated, refined quality that suits couples who want elegance without pretension. Exclusive use only.

The Coniston Hotel, Skipton

Set on a 1,400-acre estate with its own lake, the Coniston combines country house hotel with stunning Dales scenery. The Huntsman's Lodge is a newer events space with panoramic views. The lakeside location provides spectacular photo opportunities, particularly at sunset.

Denton Hall, Ilkley

A Grade II listed Jacobean manor house with a separate orangery for ceremonies. The house has been beautifully maintained, with original features throughout. The gardens and woodland provide a secluded, private feel. Intimate venue — up to about 100 for a sit-down meal.

The Principal Hotel, York

A grand Victorian railway hotel in the centre of York. The Garden Room is a stunning events space with a dramatic arched ceiling. Being in the city centre means York Minster is minutes away for photos, and guests can walk to restaurants and bars. Ideal for couples who want a city wedding with a sense of occasion.

What to Look for in a Yorkshire Venue

  • Accommodation — Yorkshire is large and rural. Venues with on-site rooms mean guests can stay over, which is especially important for winter weddings when country roads can be challenging
  • Separate spaces — the best Yorkshire venues have distinct areas for the ceremony, drinks reception, and meal. This creates a sense of journey through the day
  • Photo opportunities — Yorkshire's landscapes are stunning. Venues with grounds, gardens, or views give your photographer material that enhances every album
  • Weather resilience — Yorkshire weather is unpredictable. Ensure the venue works entirely indoors if needed
