Best Wedding Venues in Derbyshire: A Magician's Guide
Written by Nick Rushton — Award-Winning Magician
Derbyshire has an incredible range of wedding venues — from Peak District barns with moorland views to grand stately homes and intimate country pubs. Having performed at weddings across Derbyshire for over 29 years, here are the venues that consistently deliver outstanding wedding days.
Chatsworth House
One of the grandest stately homes in England. Getting married at Chatsworth is a once-in-a-lifetime experience — the Painted Hall, the grounds, and the sheer scale of the place are breathtaking. Exclusive hire of the house and grounds for your wedding day is available, though it comes with a price tag to match. For couples who want a truly spectacular venue, nothing in Derbyshire comes close.
Hassop Hall
A beautiful country house hotel near Bakewell in the heart of the Peak District. The hall dates back to the 17th century and has period features throughout — panelled rooms, ornate ceilings, and open fireplaces. The separate drinks reception room works well for a close-up magician, and the gardens provide stunning Peak District photo backdrops.
Shottle Hall
A Georgian country house between Derby and Ashbourne with 5 acres of grounds. The Orangery is a popular ceremony space with floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the gardens. The separate drinks reception area flows naturally into the dining room. Well-managed, reasonably priced, and consistently good.
The Priest House by the River, Castle Donington
A charming riverside hotel with beautiful grounds along the River Trent. The Marquee Garden can host outdoor ceremonies in summer, and the converted barn works as a reception space year-round. The riverside setting is particularly photogenic.
Peak Edge Hotel, Chesterfield
A contemporary hotel on the edge of the Peak District with stunning views across the Derbyshire countryside. The modern interior is a contrast to the traditional country houses — clean lines, large windows, and a light, airy feel. The terrace overlooking the hills is spectacular for drinks receptions in good weather.
Kedleston Hall
A National Trust property with a spectacular neo-classical interior designed by Robert Adam. The Marble Hall is one of the most impressive ceremony spaces in the Midlands. The parkland grounds, designed by Capability Brown, provide endless photo opportunities. Like Chatsworth, it's a venue that makes a statement.
The Maynard, Grindleford
A boutique hotel in the Hope Valley with views across the Peak District. Intimate, stylish, and beautifully positioned in one of the most scenic valleys in Derbyshire. Works best for smaller weddings of up to about 80 guests. The terrace overlooking the valley is wonderful for summer drinks receptions.
Breadsall Priory
A Marriott hotel in a Grade II listed 13th-century priory just outside Derby. The priory has genuine historic character — vaulted ceilings, stone walls, and period features. The grounds include a golf course and gardens. It combines period charm with the reliability of a chain hotel's service standards.
The Old Hall Hotel, Buxton
Reputedly the oldest hotel in England, dating from 1573. The Victorian ballroom and period public rooms have real character. Buxton itself is a beautiful spa town, and the hotel's central location means guests can explore the town before and after the wedding. Good for couples who want a venue with genuine history.
Callow Hall, Ashbourne
A Victorian country house recently refurbished to a high standard. Set in 35 acres on the edge of Dovedale, with views across the Derbyshire countryside. The refurbishment has brought it bang up to date while preserving the character of the original building. A strong choice for couples who want contemporary comfort in a traditional setting.
What Makes Derbyshire Special
Derbyshire's biggest asset is the Peak District. Venues with moorland views, riverside settings, or hilltop locations offer photo opportunities that are hard to match anywhere in England. The county also offers excellent value compared to equivalent venues in the South East.
- Peak District venues — stunning scenery but check access roads in winter. Some are down narrow lanes that can be challenging for coaches
- Derby city venues — easier access and transport links, but less of the rural charm
- Accommodation — many Peak District venues have limited on-site rooms. Book nearby B&Bs and cottages early for guests
