Best Wedding Venues in Birmingham: A Magician's Guide
Written by Nick Rushton — Award-Winning Magician
Having performed at weddings across Birmingham and the West Midlands for over 29 years, I've seen the inside of almost every wedding venue in the city. Some are stunning but impractical. Some look ordinary in photos but create incredible atmospheres on the day. Here's my honest guide to the best wedding venues in Birmingham, based on what actually matters when you're there.
The Edgbaston Boutique Hotel
A beautifully restored Georgian townhouse in the heart of Edgbaston. Intimate, stylish, and perfect for weddings of up to 100 guests. The separate cocktail bar works brilliantly for a drinks reception with a close-up magician before moving through to the dining room. The boutique feel means it doesn't need much decorating — the venue does the work for you.
The Burlington Hotel
One of Birmingham's most iconic venues, right in the city centre. The Burlington Suite is a grand ballroom that holds up to 500 guests for larger weddings. The separate pre-function area is ideal for drinks reception entertainment. For couples who want a big, glamorous city wedding, it's hard to beat.
Highbury Hall
A stunning Victorian mansion set in its own grounds in Moseley. Licensed for ceremonies in multiple rooms, with beautiful gardens for photos. The main hall has incredible period features — stained glass, carved woodwork, original fireplaces. It feels special without being stuffy. Capacity of around 120 for a sit-down meal.
The Belfry Hotel
Famous for golf, but also an excellent wedding venue. Multiple function rooms of varying sizes, extensive grounds for photos, and good accommodation for guests travelling from further afield. The Ryder Suite holds up to 350. The separate drinks reception areas work well for entertainment — I've performed here many times and the layout is magician-friendly.
Fazeley Events
A converted Victorian factory in Digbeth — Birmingham's creative quarter. Exposed brick, industrial beams, and a blank canvas aesthetic that suits modern, creative couples. It's a dry hire venue, so you bring everything in (catering, bar, decorations), which means more work but total creative control. Capacity around 200.
Moor Hall Hotel
Set in 80 acres of parkland in Sutton Coldfield, Moor Hall has the feel of a country house hotel while being 20 minutes from the city centre. The grounds are beautiful for photos, and the separate conservatory works well as a drinks reception space. It's a reliable, well-managed venue that consistently delivers good weddings.
The Custard Factory
Another Digbeth venue with an industrial, creative feel. Multiple event spaces of different sizes, from intimate rooms for 50 to larger halls for 200+. The quirkiness won't suit every couple, but for those who want something different from a traditional hotel wedding, it's a great option.
Nuthurst Grange
Just south of Birmingham in Hockley Heath, Nuthurst Grange is a country house hotel with beautiful gardens and an orangery. It feels secluded and rural despite being minutes from the M42. Weddings here tend to be smaller and more intimate — up to about 80 for a sit-down meal. The orangery is a lovely space for a wedding ceremony.
The ICC Birmingham
For very large weddings (300+), the International Convention Centre offers huge ballroom spaces with full AV capability. It's corporate in feel, so it needs significant decoration to feel like a wedding venue, but for couples from large families who need capacity above all else, it works.
Hogarths Hotel
A Georgian manor house in Dorridge, just south of Birmingham. The wood-panelled rooms have real character, and the mature gardens provide excellent photo opportunities. It has a cosy, welcoming feel that works particularly well for autumn and winter weddings. Capacity around 120 for a seated meal.
What Makes a Venue Work
Beyond the aesthetics, the things that make a venue genuinely good for a wedding day:
- Separate spaces — a different room for the ceremony, drinks reception, and meal creates a sense of journey through the day
- Good flow — guests should move naturally between spaces without bottlenecks or confusion
- Outdoor space — even if you're not planning outdoor entertainment, gardens or a terrace give guests somewhere to go for fresh air and photos
- Accommodation — venues with rooms mean guests can stay over, which means a more relaxed evening
- Experienced coordinators — a venue with a dedicated wedding coordinator who knows the timings, the suppliers, and the common pitfalls is worth its weight in gold
